Volunteers are needed so that we can provide a fun opportunity that allows FLL teams to demonstrate the great things that they have done this season.

Each event requires many volunteers with a broad spectrum of talents to support teams, volunteers, audience members and competition demands. We cannot hold the competitions without volunteers.

Please see the list of  positions available below –  we have roles that need some technical background as well as many that are completely non-technical.  Many positions are available for those with no prior experience and/or are affiliated with a team.

TRAINING Training in morning if needed and willingness to use new scoring software. Generally works closely with Head Referee, particularly if there are any questions about a scoresheet

POSITION SUMMARY Perform mandatory robot inspections to ensure compliance with robot construction rules. Determine inspection outcome and escalate to Head Referee for final Pass/Fail determination.

  • FLL experience not required; LEGO and LEGO Mindstorms knowledge strongly preferred
  • Mechanical aptitude helpful, basic knowledge of electronics is helpful

TRAINING Assumes knowledge of basic LEGO electrical and parts including LEGO sensors. Will take direction and escalate questions / issues to Head Referee

  • FLL experience not required, but helpful
  • Ability to reach across to center of 4 foot wide competition table
  • Attention to detail with a steady hand to reset the LEGO Mission models is needed
  • Physically active role; ability to stand for long periods of time and quickly move about the field
  • Can be a sibling, parent or relative of current FLL team member

TRAINING Head Referee will typically conduct training in morning, and provides guidance during the competition

POSITION SUMMARY The Judge Advisor oversees the judging process and judging quality for the event. The Judge Advisor ensures that the FLL Global Standards for Judging and Awards are followed. Judge Advisors are responsible for overseeing all judges for the event, including any necessary pre-event communication and training.

POSITION SUMMARY There are 3 types of FIRST LEGO League Judges: Core Values, Project and Robot Design. Each Judge, in a panel with 1 or 2 others, will interview and observe teams in the Judging rooms as well as potentially in the Pit, and on the playing field. The Judge position serves as a role model for the team members. Judges participate in writing short awards scripts extolling the merits of winning teams and assists with award presentations to the teams.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS NEEDED

  • FLL experience not required but very beneficial
  • Knowledge of the current season challenge needed
  • Strong assessment skills needed
  • Ability to effectively relate to youth aged 9-14 and be a role model at all times
  • Ability to collaborate with others and work as a team

TRAINING Online training and Certification

TIME COMMITMENT All day plus a couple of hours of pre-event online training

POSITION SUMMARY Game Referees observe team robot game matches, identifies rule violations, assesses field for scoring of matches, and participates in deliberations regarding contested calls and official scores. Position works under the direction of the Head Referee. Requires training and knowledge of this season’s Challenge Game.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS NEEDED

  • FLL experience not required but very beneficial
  • Knowledge of the current season challenge needed
  • Attention to detail is critical
  • Strong communication and diplomatic skills
  • Physically demanding role; ability to stand for long periods of time
